Australian Great Steam Train Races 2015 - 2017
Two “Great Steam Train Races” are held annually in New South Wales: At the Hunter Valley Steamfest each April and in Sydney as part of the Transport Heritage Expo on the June Queens Birthday Long Weekend.
Both races take place on very busy sections of railway line, in between the regular services.
The preserved steam locomotives are usually from the pool of locos under the care of the NSW Rail Transport Museum.
A diesel loco is attached to the rear of the trains for “security” and assist in relocating the trains before and after the actual race.
