The sturdy CFL 1800 diesel locomotive

The CFL, the Luxembourg Railways (Chemin de Fer de Luxembourg), used beautiful diesel locomotives in the past. The 1800 series was such a series of diesel locomotives and the CFL had twenty of them in service.

They were built between 1963 and 1964 by the well-known Belgian railway manufacturer La Brugeoise et Nivelles (BN). The Belgians also had these locomotives, as series 5500, but they were not 100 percent identical to the Luxembourg machines.

A farewell run of the CFL 1800 was held on June 23, 2012.Surpringly some of them were still in service and could be found in freight service. The locomotives are now out of service and a few copies have been sold to Denmark.

The locomotive is loved by many enthusiasts and in this four-part series you can enjoy this beautiful diesel locomotive in the twilight years of its existence.
