The 88-kilometer train route into the mountains of the Himalayas represented a real feat of British engineering in order to transport the world-famous tea from Darling quickly, safely and inexpensively to the coast, where it was shipped to England. From Listvyanka the train takes a full day to circle Lake Baikal. The journey begins on a historic section of track that posed a major challenge to the former designers of the Trans-Siberian Railway. The most beautiful stretch of the Trans-Siberian Railway lies between Irkutsk in Siberia and the impressive Lake Baikal. It leads past Ulan Ude and the border town of Nauschki and finally ends in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator. Varied landscapes and exotic cities make this trip a true adventure.

Episode 18: TRANS-SIB - The Finest Section Russia / Mongolia

At General Belgrano Station in the Argentinian town Salta travellers board the &lsquo;Tren a Las Nubes&rsquo; (&lsquo;the train to the clouds&rsquo;), for an unforgettable train journey to the Argentinian Andes. The modern train offers space for more than five hundred passengers. On its long and extraordinary journey through the solitude of the Argentine mountains, the &ldquo;cloud train&rdquo; passes through a total of twenty-one tunnels. Eventually we reach an altitude of more than four thousand meters above sea level, the highest point of the train journey.

High up in the Andes, in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, we begin our journey. The Chiva Express is a colourful "bus on rails" that will take us along the &lsquo;Autoferro De Los Volcanes&rsquo;, the Route of the Volcanoes. 
Nariz Del Diabolo is the most difficult and dangerous part of the journey, it goes over a steep slope five hundred meters into the depths.

This extraordinary train journey is a contemporary document and begins in Istanbul, the golden gateway to the Orient. The train slowly leaves Istanbul and drives into the night. The destination is Damascus, the capital of Syria. A distance of 3000 km has to be covered to get there. In Jesenice, in the north of Slovenia, the historic steam railway runs through the Triglav National Park and the Sava and Soca Valleys to Nova Gorica and back several times every summer. The first stop is in Bled. To support the nostalgia, several actors ride along, dressed like train attendants in the style of the old imperial era.&nbsp;

A bullet train journey from Tokyo to Hiroshima. Tokyo Station was built in 1914 as a red brick Renaissance style building. This is where the Shinkansen starts, which has its own area in each station that is only accessible with the special tickets. All of Japan is proud of this highspeed train. The Shinkansen is legendary today - a train that came from the future.&nbsp;
