The 90th Anniversary of the Glacier Express
In August 2020, Switzerland's most famous train, the Glacier Express, celebrated its 90th anniversary. At the invitation of the Rhaetian Railway, our partner, 24Trains travelled to Switzerland to celebrate this anniversary and to make this travelogue, consisting of 2 parts, exclusively for you. We took the special luxury anniversary Glacier Express which went from Zermatt to St. Moritz. In the first part of this report we ride from Zermatt to Andermatt. On the way trips were made to the Aletsch glacier and of course we didn’t want to miss the occasion to take a ride with Furka Dampfbahn.
In the second part we travel from Andermatt to St. Moritz. The balcony locomotive 36 with 1250 hp power pulls our train over the OberAlp pass. In Disentis a Crocodile locomotive from the Rhaetian Railway takes over the traction for the last part of our journey to St. Moritz. On the way there we pass several winding tunnels and the world famous Landwasser viaduct. This ingenious structure is the icon of the Rhaetian Railway. At the end we went up to enjoy the impressive Swiss mountain landscape at an altitude of almost 3000 meters.
