Railway traffic on the Gotthard Railway Line as it was

The Swiss Gotthard Railway, which runs through the Alps, has been one of the most important North-South connections in Europe since its opening in 1882.

On 1 June 2016, the 57-kilometre Gotthard Base Tunnel was opened to increase capacity and speed. As a result train traffic on the old Gotthard route, with the 15 kilometer long old tunnel, changed enormously. Since then, all intercity trains, and much freight transport, have passed through the new base tunnel.

This four-part series shows footage shot between 2010 and 2013, thus before the opening of the new Gotthard base tunnel.

Many freight trains, and of course also international passenger trains and local trains, have been filmed. Nice to see how they make their way over the old Gotthard railway line.
