Pusteria - Val Venosta

The Pusteria railway line runs from west to east for about 70 km in the valley from which it takes its name, the Val de Pusteria. It is located in the province of Bolzano (Italy) and was built in 1870 when the valley was part of the Austrian empire. Its purpose was to connect Innsbruck with other lines coming from the east of Austria. At Fortezza the railway line is connected to the Brenner Railway. After 1918, Austria lost South Tyrol to Italy, and so the the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, F.S. (Italian Railways) took over the railway line. The line climbs about 500 meters. And the most uphill route is found after Brunico towards Dobbiaco with climbs of 2%. The traction between 1970 and 1975, when this video was recorded, was dominated by steam locmotives from the Class 741. Steam in de Val Pusertia - Part 3

The railway line is about 55 km long and connects Merano to Malles (Mals) , in the province of Bolzano, in South Tyrol. Also this line built by Austria and passed to Italy after the 1st World War. This video was filmed in 1975, when the traction was dominated by steam locomotives from the class 740. An interesting feature of the line is that the steam locomotives instead of turning around on the platform at the end of the valley, moreover like those in Pusteria Valley, used a so-called "star" which was nothing more than a set of rails and switches, where the steam locomotives going up and down they managed to turn around. In the Val Venosta - From Merano to Mals

Valsugana & Cadore

The Valsugana Railway line in Northern Italy has a length of 96 kilometers and connects Bassano with Trento. In Bassano the line continues to Venice. On the other end, at Trento, there is a connection to the important Brenner Railway Line which connects Austria with Italy. The highest point of the line is around 500 meters &nbsp;near the lakes of Caldonazzo and Levico.
Until 1918 the station of Primolano station was a border station, because the border between Austria-Hungary and Italy was here. South-Tirol became Italian after the First World War and the station of Primolano was not a border station any more.
In Primolano there is a locomotive depot, equipped with 1 shed for 2 locomotives, a water column and a turntable. The depot is now home to Societa Veneta Ferrovie which preserved the depot and some rolling stock.
This first part consists of footages which wgere recorded in 1976 and 1977. Double traction can be seen with steamlocomotives from the series 940 and 625 from the Italian Railways. Long freight trains with crushed stone were filmed.

In this second part a freight train pulled by the 625.142 steam locomotive was filmed. It went from Trento to Primolano and back. The steam locomotive had to be turned on the turntable to go back. The snow makes the landscape even more brilliant!

Valsugana Railway Line - Part 2

The 44 kilometers long Cadore railway in Northern Italy connects Belluno with Calalzo. Belluno, 383 meters above sea level was connected in 1914. Calalzo lies at an altitude of 683 meters above sea level and it took another 30 years to connect it with the railways. The reason was that the railway line had to climb through the Piave Valley and&nbsp; a lot of tunnels and bridges had to be constructed to gain altitude. In two parts you can see beautiful authentic footage that was recorded in 1976 and 1977. The steam locomotives from class 745, and also other series, were still in active service. The railway line is located in the north of Austria, between Linz and the border with Czechia. It was recorded in January 1976 with a lot of snow, which makes the landscape look like a fairy-tale! In this two part film, of which this is the first part, you will see steam locomotives in action on the Austrian Vordernberg Railway line. This standard gauge rack railway line is north of Klagenfurt in the province of Styria. The stations Vordenberg and Vordenbergmarkt are at the beginning. The line ends at the Eisenerz Mine where iron ore is mined. The iron ore is transported with two steam locomotives in open wagons from Pr&auml;blich, at an altitude of 1232 meters above sea level, to Vordenberg at 830 meters above sea level.
