Dutch diesel locomotive 2278 in action at the STAR

24Trains.tv has a video report of the diesel locomotive 2278 that made rides at the STAR on February 27th  2022 in the Netherlands. The Stadskanaal Rail Foundation, known as the Museum Railway STAR, was established on 26 June 1992 with the aim of preserving the historic Veendam – Stadskanaal – Musselkanaal railway line and operating a tourist service on this route. This specific day, the STAR ran a so-called 'yellow' timetable between Stadskanaal and Veendam with the 2278.

The NS used the diesel-electric locomotives of the series 2200 from 1955 to 2003 not only for freight trains throughout the country, but also for passenger services. In total 150 of these diesel locomotives were ordered by NS. The 150 2200s were based on an American design by Baldwin (mechanical), Westinghouse (electrical) and the National Supply Company (diesel engine).

The first 100 locomotives were built by Heemaf in Hengelo (the Netherlands). The mechanical part was built by Allan from Rotterdam, the diesel engines by Stork. Heemaf did the electrical installation themselves. Fifty units were built by the French joint venture MTE, consisting of the Creusot-Loire (mechanical) and Jeumont-Schneider (electrical) factories.
