Groceries trains from Italy - A unique film from the archives of the Swiss railways

The video was made in 1953 and shows how freight trains with food from Italy go through Switzerland to the markets in Northwest-Europe. One of such freight trains is being followed in this video. The train from the Italian Railways, the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) arrives in the Chiasso marshalling yard. The documents are being checked and of course there is a check of the Swiss customs. Then the train departures towards Basel, pulled by a beautiful Ae 8/14 locomotive (no 11801) over the Gotthard Railway. At the marshalling yard in Basel the train is split in a part towards Germany and a part for France. The French (SNCF) and German (DB) Railways pick up their part of the freight train with steam locomotives. Enjoy watching this unique film from the archives of the Swiss railways (SBB)!
