Prussian steam locomotives in Turkey

In 1989 the robust steam locomotives were still in freight service on the Black Sea coast. These steam locomotives were made in Germany. Two beautiful examples, the 45 017 and the 45 049, carried 3-4 pairs of trains daily from the port town of Eregli to the Schwachencuk coal mine. The so-called "island railway" has the character of a mountain railway, because the route goes up steadily and with many bends. There are also countless tunnels, hairpin bends and natural beauty.

The steam locomotives do the heavy lifting here, transporting long coal trains every day, always combined with passenger transport in this impassable region.

Due to the difficult route, spectacular shots were taken such as continuous uphill skidding due to the high train load, splitting of the train after getting stuck and skidding manoeuvring in the mine.
