Switzerland started electrifying its railway network already in the beginning of the 20th century. For example, several sections of the Lötschberg-Simplon railway line were already operating electrically in 1906 and 1913. In 1920, the Gotthard Railway was put into electrical operation and in 1928 more than half of the SBB (the Swiss National Railways) routes were electrified.
This does not, of course, mean that there were no steam locomotives running at all, on the contrary, Switzerland had beautiful steam locomotives such as the C 5/6 nicknamed 'Elephant' that operated on the Gotthard line. A number of these locomotives have been preserved and sometimes they organise special rides with them for enthusiasts.
In this series you can see the 'Elephant' in action, along other beautiful steam locomotives that have been preserved.
