South African Modern Traction Spectacular 2013 - 2018

This set of three DVDs brings a comprehensive review of modern trains and diesel/electric locomotives in South Africa. In South Africa, we visit all of eight provinces, reviewing most main and branch line routes, the coal and iron ore lines. This will include Transnet and PRASA operations, plus a selection of private mine railways, which have interesting motive power.

The South African section hence covers the diesels classes 34 to 45, plus industrials from Grindrod and Traxtion etc; the electric classes 6E1 to 23E; PRASA 5M2 and 10M series EMUs, plus the new Alstom ‘Xtrapolis Mega EMU. The Gautrain rapidrail system and its EMUs receive some attention. The recent Trans Africa diesel locomotive, or TAL, from Transnet, also features.

New contract locomotives are followed on test trips, plus there are various cab rides. We also feature reviews of the trains in Namibia (class 33) and Zimbabwe (classes DE6, 9 and 10). Refurbished second hand locomotives from Queensland Railways also receive some coverage.

There is also a look at Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique cross-border traffic at certain locations, such as Komatipoort, Victoria Falls and Mahikeng.

The producer believes that this series provides the most comprehensive review currently available of the modern traction haulage scene on the subcontinent. Indeed, spectacular scenery, trains and modern locomotives on the region’s regular 1067mm gauge and standard gauge, in the case of the Gautrain.
