China – Steam paradise

See for yourself why Chinese steam in 2004 was still so important - join Nigel Harris, Managing Editor of EMAP Transport Division, on the trip of a lifetime to China. There's over ninety minutes of action and information in this feature length look at China which highlights some of the greatest steam action to be found anywhere in the world today.

Features include:

  • Chengde - the only line in the world to still regularly employ standard gauge steam operations on all trains. The sight and sound of three locomotives as they storm the grade with their heavy trains has to be seen to be believed!
  •  The Ji Tong line - join Nigel Harris and the other lucky readers as they journey over the entire length of this fantastic steam railway - stopping off to explore the best lineside action at Lindong, and of course over the wonderful Jingpeng Pass. Plus there's an atmospheric visit to Daban shed.
  • Dahuichang - a fascinating steam narrow gauge steam railway that still uses vintage four wheel tubs, which are unloaded using a rotary tippler.
  • Beijing - a look at both the old and new city, and a visit to the great wall.
