In May 2012, the Betuweroute (the freight line in the Netherlands) was closed due to works in Emmerich (Germany). Much of the international freight traffic is handled via Venlo and via the partly single-track line between Kaldenkirchen and Viersen. A long procession of Dutch trains on German soil can be seen.
