The Utrecht-Nieuwegein/IJsselstein Express tram

The Utrecht - Nieuwegein/IJsselstein express tram, abbreviated as SUNIJ, was put into use in December 1983. Utrecht was therefore at the forefront of the revival of the tram, which has since taken off throughout Europe.

This characteristic express tram can be seen in footage taken between 1983 and 1986. The trams were built by the Swiss SIG, the Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft, and had a recognizable yellow-orange colour scheme.

The tram line is followed from the starting point in the Utrecht Moreelsepark to the terminus Nieuwegein-Zuid. The other temporary terminus was at the Doorslag, because the line to IJsselstein was only completed in 1985. The environment has changed a lot in the meantime, the trams have already been replaced, so that makes this footage extra nostalgic.
