In May 2012, the Betuweroute (the freight line in the Netherlands) was closed due to works in Emmerich (Germany). Much of the international freight traffic is handled via Venlo and via the partly single-track line between Kaldenkirchen and Viersen. A long procession of Dutch trains on German soil can be seen. Kaldenkirchen (D)

A trip to the most northerly railway in Europe: Northern Sweden. Large iron ore mines near Kiruna transport dozens of ore trains per day, including to Narvik. They have a length of up to 68 cars and are pulled by the strongest electric locomotives in the world, the Dm3 locomotives and the more modern IORE locomotives.
